Archetribe Waterworks
(as heard on the 'Hearts of Space' and 'Echoes' syndicated radio programs)
"Very few recordings can be labeled as “monumental,” but Waterworks from the quintet Archetribe might qualify for the term. It’s not just that this 2-CD set represents two totally disparate takes on “ambient” music (the first disc features powerful pulsing ethno-tribal/fusion at its finest while the second disc contains spacious, drifting, and haunting soundscapes), but how potent the music on both discs is, how proficient and inspired the musicians play, and how the overall impact is positively mesmerizing, whether one seeks energetic and infectious electro-acoustic grooves and melodies or mysterious floating darkly tinted sonic portraits." Snapshots of the CD package.
Waterworks is a two CD set. The first CD is percussion-oriented, lively, more of what you might call world-fusion. The second CD is ambient. With Earthtones, I kept the dynamic range in a fairly safe zone. By splitting Waterworks, the first CD can be more adventurous, and the second CD can be more consistent.
Gunnard Doboze returns on duduk and clarinet. Billy Miller, who made an appearance on Blue Forest Mass, contributes flute, percussion and a sometimes Celtic influence. Phillip Lampe and Grant Smith of Spiral 7 contribute touch guitar/sitar and percussion, respectively. I put everything together and add Warr Guitar, guitar, keyboards, voice and percussion.
